UCR Seismologists contradict OVSICORI on earthquake

Costa Rica earthquake

Seismologists National Seismological Network (RSN), University of Costa Rica, discredit the projection of Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) on follow predicting an earthquake in Nicoya, Guanacaste.

The RSN considered improper pointing an earthquake in a particular geographic area of the country.

“What we think is that it is not appropriate to bring a geographical area of Costa Rica, Costa Rica when everything is at risk.

“There are so many seismic sources in Costa Rica and we do not know how close the production threshold of an earthquake, and it does not seem practical or appropriate to alarm the population, because any part of the country may experience a phenomenon like this,” explained Lepolt Linkimer, a seismologist at the RSN.

This event comes a day after the announcement that OVSICORI earthquake measuring 7.6 moment magnitude (Mw), recorded at 8:42 a. m. September 5, release only 40% of the energy accumulated in the past eight years.

We tried to get the version of Mariano Protti, OVSICORI seismologist, who has two decades studying what happens in Nicoya, but did not answer calls to his cell phone.

Moreover, Victor Gonzalez, a seismologist at the same institution, said he preferred not to comment on the issue.

The National Seismological Network recommends the call for prevention is applied to the whole country.

“In the country have been produced 63 earthquakes since we are independent, and have taken all over the country. So we seem to be targeting a specific area, “said Linkimer.

“Also, it seems that was created as a great anxiety,” he added.
