Tourists chose La Fortuna de San Carlos for Top Ten Emerging Destinations Awards


The leading travel portal, TripAdvisor chose La Fortuna de San Carlos, in the northern region of Costa Rica as one of the 10 emerging destinations or more growth in 2013.

Only Havana, Cuba surpassed Costa Rica on the TripAdvisor ranking list.

The list also includes Kathmandu (Nepal), Jerusalem (Israel), Cuzco (Peru) Ambergris Cave (Belize), Sapporo (Japan), Hanoi (Vietnam), Corralejo (Spain) and Fortaleza (Brazil).

Economic activity in La Fortuna de San Carlos, which revolves around the Arenal volcano, has seen rising numbers domestic and foreign tourists in recent years.

For Paul Rodriguez, executive director of the Chamber of Tourism of the Northern Zone, this is a result of the promotion on national and international levels.

According to Rodriguez, 2013 has been a good year for the area. Since 2009 companies in the area have promoted more visits to the area. According to the Chamber, U.S. tourism to the area continues to grow every year.

High season began on 15 November. For 2014, the National Chamber of Tourism expects hotel occupancy in the northernregion to reach 75%.
