You might be thinking how is it possible that scientists could predict such a massive earthquake – but they did.
If it were true that scientists can not predict events such as the one that occurred this morning at around 8:45am in Guanacaste, then how could it be that for the past few weeks local news has been warning of such an event. Not only that but they also said it would happen in the Nicoya of Guanacaste!
Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science have developed a theory that suggests that before a big event like today’s earthquake, the Earth expulses almost double the normal ozone which can some times be detected by humans and that this is why animals behave unusually just before an earthquake. The research led by Raúl A. Baragiola said that crushing rock produces a detectable amount of ozone.
The Red Sismológica had posted on its Facebook page a summary of Baragiola’s research which was published originally in Applied Physics Letters late last year. The matter is of much more than just theoretical value because Costa Rica is geologically active and a major quake had been predicted for the Nicoya Peninsula area based on historical trends.
In fact, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica reported that Nicoya had the potential to generate seismic tremors ranging between 7.7 and 7.9 degrees. Apparently they weren’t that far off considering the final size of today’s earthquake coming in at 7.6 on the richter scale.
This was announced after a virtual forum held on Tuesday, August 21 in which officals insisted that it is impossible to predict a date when such a massive event may take place. Irony?
Victor Gonzalez (director of OVSICORI), said that people should be prepared and should maintain active local emergency committees for any chance an event should occur.
OVSICORI specialists say the Nicoya earthquake would cause an uprising in the west coast of the peninsula that could reach a meter or meter and a half while at the same time sinking the Gulf area by a few inches. Turns out this was also a correct assumption whereas it is now reported that as a result of today’s quake the ocean level rose 1.5m and this has created a tide recession of some 20m and a drop in shoreline sea level of 1.5m.
Investigators are also investigating parts of the coast where sea levels were which are now completely dry of sea water. Additionally they are also investigating a strange red liquid that has appear at river deltas in the area.
