OIJ Raid Knockoff Converse Business in Costa Rica

A warehouse in the village of El Bosque in San Rafael de Oreamuno, Cartago, had 1,400 pairs of shoes stored, which, although appear to be a recognized American brand, are fakes. El Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) yesterday raided the warehouse and seized 70 boxes with 20 pairs of shoes each.

The raid was about 8 a. m. The place belongs to a local shop keeper.

The tennis shoes are labeled with tags similar to those of Converse. Representatives of that company in the United States filed the complaint with the Costa Rican authorities, according to the OIJ.

The agents started the investigation three months ago, for the apparent crime of violation of copyright law.

During the raid, the authorities had the help of an expert, who determined that the mark was not original.

Police have not determined the value of the merchandise. Nor was anyone detained in the operation.

The OIJ said the investigations continue to determine the origin of the product and those responsible for counterfeiting.
