Government National Policy Advances in Mental Health

The Health Ministry plans to submit by the end of 2012 the text of the national mental health policy which aims to increase efforts to educate society to the mentally ill.

The World Health Organization estimates, a quarter of patients who visit general practitioners have at least one psychiatric disorder and 17 of every 100 are depressed.

The ministerial policy seeks to implement strategies to adapt to society of people with mental illness and that confinement to a psychiatric hospital is not the only solution in the country.

The Minister of Health, Daisy Corrales, says the Brazilian model will be implemented to ensure the implementation of policy at the national reality.

The National Psychiatric Hospital received a budget increase this year by more than one billion colones, one of the few medical centers that has increased its budget for this period.
